help with setting focus options

I would like some help in changing my focus options setting. I go to the camera icon on left of menu screen and over to the AF-area mode. the designation on the right just shows "--". I click and the screen shows two options; viewfinder and licve view. View finder is a greyed yellow and when I click on viewfinder I get a message saying that this option is not available at current settings or in the camera's current state. When I activate the INFO button to access the focus mode, it also greyed out. What do I need to do to access the focus menu. Thanks for any suggestions.

Have you tried changing shooting modes? Is the camera set to "Auto" or do you have it set to another setting ie M=Manual, A=Aperture, S=Shutter, P=Program. If in Auto, that may be your problem. Just a quick thought off of the top of my head.

Walt, thanks for reply. I have tried A, S and M. no change. I also went in and set all settings to the factory reset without any change.

Did you actually do a full Factory Reset? To perform a factory reset you need to manually choose the reset option in the Shooting Menu and the Setup menu. Press "Menu", select the Shooting Menu and scroll through the options until "Reset Shooting Options" is highlighted, press "OK", highlight "Yes" and press "OK" again. Repeat this for the Setup menu.
