D3200 speed light....dunno what I want...Any advise please?

Hello

I purchased a nikon d3200 on a whim a couple of years ago and life got in the way of being able to look through the lense. Anyway long story short - I have dusted off this camera and i know its only low level but I would really really love to get into flash photography (or have ago at least) I have spent four days on google, various forms, ebay and amazon reviews etc looking to a speedlight that is fully compatible and simple plug and play (i have no idea what i am doing or terms etc) as i work and learn on a trial and error basis. I dont know what ittl or hss or cpsomethingorother is. I just want to press buttons and learn :)

I have been looking at sb700 to youngos I have no idea what I am doing. I am looking to only use it on the hot shoe, both low light indoor and outdoor and preferably as automatic as they come.

Any advise, tips previous experience, dos and donts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for reading this and Hi

Hanna :)

Welcome to the forum, Hanna. You will find some great info on here and some great people with a boat load of knowledge. Please don't double post as you gain nothing but spread out the same discussion which in the long run actually hinders your results.

ittl: Nikon's version of Through The Lens this is light compensation using flash to properly light a subject from lens transmitting information on how much light is needed to "properly" fill the area.

hss: high speed sync. the flash's ability to fire within a given amount of time in correlation to shutter/curtain speed.

There is a lot of relevant information that can be found using google and youtube videos. Your best bet would be to watch videos as the walkthrough may be what you need for the information that you seek. Good luck with your path to enLIGHTenment.

Welcome to the forum.

I would suggest buying a lower price import flash at first, like Yongnuo YN565 or Neewer VK750. They will work well and can teach you a lot, and a good bet you'll never need more. Do think about using Bounce flash with them, that is the good stuff.

The D3200 cannot do HSS, so you don't need that feature for it. HSS is kinda specialized anyway.

iTTL is Nikons system of automatic point and shoot flash, like compact cameras are automatic flash exposure. Most flash models will also do Manual flash mode too, where it is your job to always see the flash power level correctly. Most any Manual flash will work, but for a Nikon, automatic flash must be iTTL. If it says "for Nikon", it will be.
