I thought it sounded a bit too good (and cheap) to be an effective solution.

I have enough trouble now getting reliable tech to work half the time so will probably give these a miss then.

Buy a D7200 or D750. They both have built in WiFi that works like a charm

I was just hoping for a cheap alternative to the £40 WiFi connector so spending £600+ on a new camera isn't really an option. But thanks anyway!

The Wifi adapter from Nikon is not that great either. I have one for my D7100 and have only used it a few times. More of a PIA than it is worth.

Trust me, Buy a wi-if built one as I have tried every option out there that is not built in. Lots of expenses and its not worth it it, more headache than it's worth.
