Suggestion for another lens...hoping for some eagle shots

Hi All,

I am hoping that as my skills improve that I will be able to photograph some eagles in my local area. The Conowingo Dam in Maryland is a popular location in the late Fall for seeing eagles. I currently have 18-55 kit lens that came with my 3200 and a 35mm f/1.8 prime lens. What would be a good lens to possibly catch shots of eagles? I am going to say the distance from where I would be standing to where the eagle are in the tree line is approximately the length of a football field.

As suggested rent the longest prime you can. If you want to purchase all super telephotos are expensive. The least expensive new purchase option is the 300mm F4 with TC1.4. That gives the option of two focal lengths
. 300mm F4
. 420mm F5.6

All the other lenses which achieve 400mm or more are twice as expensive.

Tamron 150-500mm could be a good option and is relatively cheap... Note I say "Relatively".

As previously suggested, rent one first and see how you like it.

Or of course, you could do what I did and go to a display (Also known as "Cheating" lol) where the birds are 20 meters away, not 100...

If you can get close, and the light will be good, 300mm will be a minimum. If you cannot get close then 600mm to 800mm minimum and expect to wish for 1000mm or more.

Don't know about the USA but in an increasing number of wildlife reserves in Europe, the photographing of wild birds is illegal. Check first!
