What Lens

I have the 55-300, 18-55kit and 40mm micro

ok. then to answer your questions, depends how much room you have available, however I assume standing on a football field room to move is not going to be an issue. I suggest either the 35 1.8G or 50mm 1.8G. Both very versatile lenses for portrait and general purpose/walkaround on a crop sensor body.

35mm prime would do nicely, I'd think. You can also catch it with the 18-55 in a pinch, but the 35 prime would probably get ya a better overall image. It's that or back up! ;)

Thanks both. So I wouldnt need a wide angle like a sigma 10-20mm or similar?

I have that Sigma lense and it would work perfectly (have used it for group pictures were there was limited distance). But if I have enough room to back up, I'd probably use the 35mm 1.8 because that would be on the camera already.

I think your 40mm micro would be fine for a group, unless you want to fuzzy the background. It is a great landscape lens and what you are after is a landscape of tough looking faces.

If you want sharper images then there is 35mm F1.8 DX. Otherwise the 18-55 will do. The zoom can go much wider, so it is ideal if you are limited in space (to move back).

It is, it spend more time on my D3200 than any other lens. Small unobtrusive and great for just cruising round with just shooting at random or street photography.
