D3200 Flash/Speedlight Options?

Hi All,

I'm just wanting to know from the people that own a D3200 what model flash you guys have purchased, and was it worth purchasing?

I would like to have one in my kit, as I am not at all happy with using the built in flash, but am unsure as to what options I have.

I understand that the D3200 does not have the Nikon controller thing built into it, so it cannot run a flash any quicker than 1/200 shutter speed, so what are people out there using?

Cheers

I would suggest the SB700. It is a great flash for any Nikon camera. The controler thing and the shudder thing are different matters. The Controller is the Commander Mode and that allows the camera to fire the flash off camera with no wires. I can control several flashes at a time. Nice option. I am not sure about the newer models but I think you still have to move up the at least the D7000 to get the commander mode. The shutter speed sync is just the camera limitation. I used my SB720 on my D3100, D5100, D7000 and D7100. It works wonders on camera and you can always add triggers to be able to use it off camera. What I really like about it is that it can tilt up and to either side. You can even shoot it behind your head for really diffused light if needed. I have done that before to get the light just like I wanted it.

This is the shot. On camera flash SB720

Thanks for your input Don.
I have one question regarding your comments, you said the above line, so does that apply to my camera? Is it possible for me to control subsequent slave flashes? Or is that when I need to purchase controllers/triggers?

Also I didn't quite understand, but were you agreeing that I couldn't fire a flash any quicker than 1/200?

Cheers

I can answer those questions, I think. The SB700 will work as the commander and work several remote flashes as well, and with the D3200, yes, the max shutter speed with flash is 1/200. Some of the models will allow for HSS (High Speed Sync) but I think you have to go up to the D7000 or so to get that.

Thanks pretzel, that's what I had kind of deciphered from all the sites I have read, so it's good to have clarification...

When I google the Sb 720 I get no hits, is it meant to be Sb 700?

I
did mean the SB700, been a long day.

There is a difference in it being the Commander and the camera being the commander. The SB700 can control additional flashes as long as it on ON THE CAMERA. With the D7000 and up the camera can be the commander and fire the SB700 without a flash attached to the camera. That is one of the reasons I moved up to the D7000 from the D3100/D5100

SB-800 used. I have three of them and they NEVER fail me. I got them to work remotely using one of them as a commander in twenty minutes the first time that I used them.
