Hi all..so I'm new to photography. I've been messing around with my nikon d3100. The lens I have is the 18-55mm general lens that it comes with, so its good for standard photo taking. I'm looking for a decent lens that takes photos of things from a distance-ie.-sunsets,mountains,etc. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Hi JJ Rick is right. What's your price range. If you're looking at taking photos of Vistas and Sunsets, then that 18-55 is a great lens. If, however, you want a shot of that bird sitting up in a tree then I'd suggest either the 55-300 or the 70-300 VR lense

Just starting out and trying to keep the cost down I would go with something that's in the 300mm range. I would lean more towards the 55-300mm.

Word of advise, if your looking for a zoom lens for distance I would by pass the 200mm range zooms all together. As many have posted here they grow tired of it quickly and want more reach. Next step up would be something in the 55-300mm range.

70-300mm VRII lens would be my suggestion. But if money is no object then get the 600mm VR f/4.0 lens. B&H has it at the rock bottom price of $9449 out the door. ;)

If you go with the Nikon 70-300VR, you wont be disappointed .

I got a Nikon 2ndhand 70-300D first, and was not very happy with my results, then I bought a new model with the VR. Much better.

Here are a couple of photos with that lens on my D3100.
