D3100 Buttons Do Not Respond

I've recently bought a Nikon D3100. Basicly the camera can take photographs fine, the shutter button works, so does flash.

None of the other buttons work. The ones on the left hand of the screen (Play, Menu etc.) neither does erase, OK or the navigating buttons. Also when I turn the wheel to Guide for example, as to choose, set up, tke photo or view photos, the navigating buttons wont let me choose any options, neither lets me choose OK.

Is there a locking system that doesn't allow me to do this or is it a fault within the camera?

I would take it immediately back to the store where you bought it ! Sounds like you have a faulty one ...
Good luck

Try a re-set see page #131 and 136 of the user's manual for the D3100 in order to reset the shooting and the setup menu. Also check to see if you have the correct firmware version.

Ken, Thanks for the advice. I can't use any of the buttons as they don't respond, so I can't access the menu. Please can you explain what you mean with the correct firmware version? How do I go around in checking this.

Have you tried removing the battery?

In the Menu / Setup Menu there is a selection for Firmware version.

But if you can't use the menu button this will not help.

I can't remember what the hard re-set procedure is?? Hold menu button and Info button in at the same time and it defaults to factory settings -- I think?

Call Nikon support ---> Nikon Support Contact Information

I had a problem in the past and actually got a live person to talk with who spent the time needed to resolve my problem. If nothing else they will be able to advise you on the next step.

Good luck

None of these reset steps matter if you can't make the button presses that control these things initiate. Take the camera back immediately to the store you bought it at or call Nikon. It's doesn't appear to be a problem that we can help you diagnose, unfortunately :/
Sorry to hear that, but I'm sure Nikon will set it straight :)

Iam also facing similar problem with nikon5500. Even touch screen not responding. Can you pls suggest how you got it fixed.

This is a D3100 thread from 2012 (6 years ago) that basically concluded the camera had failed and needed to be repaired. I would suggest your start a new thread on the D5500 thread and provide more details on your issue and what you have done to try a fix.
