I haven't used it, I'm sure it does a good job..

Just a thought! Have yo considered The AF-S 300mm F4 A fair bit more money but in my opinion a lot more lens...

Unfortunately you've entered a hobby that can be expensive. That DX lens is ok provided you stop down to f7.1 or f8 on the long end if you use with good light.

Yes Bill I had a 1.5 teleconverter..Not sure if it was a Kenko or Tamron...Took some great surfing shots with it..

My son in law has it I'll have to see if he still uses it..

Awesome, I am going to spend a lot of time shooting this fall at Intro Page Friends of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, NWR, National Wildlife Refuge, Birding

I am thinking the 300 f4 and a 1.5 to 2 teleconverter might well be the best route for me to try. I haven't shot at the Bosque yet but friends say it is amazing. Long reach will be important since cropped shots lose too much image quality.

Here is a slideshow of the Bosque, this location is about 50 miles from where I live.

I have the 55-300 VR lens, and I can tell you it does the job. I use it both on the D200 and the D40. Excellent results. Naturally it's not like the 300 F4 the boys are talking about, but for a lens on a budget.......ya can't beat the price for what it does deliver. :)

I bought mine last year, and due to health problems only got to use it in anger a few months ago, for the money you can't (In my opinion) get better .... here's a shot I took a few months ago

How far away do you want to shoot ?
I own the 55-300 VR . Its a nice lens. It really gets out there.
But I also have a 18-105 VR which is my main walk around lens. It also gets out there..

Agreed. I think he (Mr. Smith) will be very happy with this lens. It should compliment his D3100.

i have the 55-300 vr lens from target or best buy stores, it works great ....but lighting has to be good, since field of light the camera can gather seems to be greatly diminished ...i will try it in manual to see if it helps.....i got mine on clearance for 270$ us at target it lived in a display tube and i talked the manager down from 450$

I have and use as my main walk-around lens the Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX . I purchased it from Amazon.com on sale for $249.95 plus free shipping. Around Christmas time last year. I Couldn't be happier with it! Never really noticed any low light issues with the lens on the D3100 as most of my shooting is done early in the mornng of sunrises, but then I'm basically an advanced beginner when it comes to photography .... so what do I know!
