Need help with micro and close up shoot

Hello all,

I just got my D3100 and I cannot figure out the setup for close up shots on objects.
I tried to play around with iso and shutter, but they are all either blurry or grainy.
Could someone please be so nice and tell me what the setup would be?

Thank you

More than likely you are to close for the shot you want. Changing settings is not the only thing you need. To do close up or Macro you need a macro lens. Try backing off until you get a good shot and then crop in post processing.

As Don said, every lens has a minimum focusing distance meaning it won't be able to focus beyond a certain closeness. Macro lenses tend to allow a closer focusing distance than most other lenses. Shutter speed can contribute to blurred images if you are hand holding the body especially if the distance between you and your subject is close. Use a tripod. If the shutter speed is really slow, even just pressing the shutter button while the camera is mounted on a tripod can move the camera slightly. For those times, it is best to use some type of remote or self-timer.

If your images are grainy, quite often that has to do with one of two things:

  1. If you are using a high ISO (perhaps indoors without any flash or supplemental lighting), sensors are know to contribute to noise. Keep your ISO below a certain number. Offhand, I don't know what that is for your particular body.
  2. During post processing, if you raise the shadows or overall exposure by quite a bit, that also contributes to noise.

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

AS the others have said, we need a lot more information to help you out. Provide a sample image with EXIF data and tell us which lens you are using.

What you probably want is a set of macro extension tubes, such as that at this link. This essentially turns your existing lens into a macro lens, by moving it farther from the focal plane, allowing it to focus much closer.

I have a similar set, and I've been getting some spectacular results using it with my stock 18-55 lens on my D3200.
