Recommendation On Bag for D3100 & 18-55 zoom lens, and 55-200 zoom lens

Hey John. Welcome. A while back, my wife bought me a Backpack from QVC of all places. The Bower Digital Pro SLR backpack. $49.96. This easily holds my D60, with lens attached as well as two additional lenses, various filters and small gadgets. I have the same two lenses as you, plus a 105mm Macro, That pretty much fills the bag. I think it's a pretty good deal for the price, but not much room for expansion.

I'd recommend a bag without a hole in the bottom.

Sometimes you get so wrapped up in the particulars that you forget the important things.

Dude! You have a great camera! Show us some pictures!

BTW Welcome aboard! Glad to have ya here!

I'd recommend a Lowepro Slingshot 100 or 200. Lifetime guarantee, and it is quality built. Will hold all the gear you have now. Go to their website at: Lowepro | Home

I second this suggestion. As much as you want to keep it simple and as small as possible, you will get other stuff later and will then have to carry 2 bags. The slingshot is wonderful as it takes so little time to get to the camera when you want to.

Another suggestion is to have several bags of different sizes. When I go on a shoot I usually decide what equipment I will need and pack a bag of a size that will carry it. I don't need to carry all of the equipment I own to every location. Way too much stuff and way to much weight to carry around.

Thanks for all the suggestions gentlemen. I live near a Hunt's Photo store, so will visit there this PM. I do like the LowePro Slingshot, but I don't know if they carry the line. I do have some other small bags right now collected from over the years from other cameras etc. So could use those in relation to the suggestion to carry just a couple of items into the field. I have the D3100 in a Quantaray drop in bag I've had for about 20 years, but there is no room for the other lens etc. I have only done test shots right now to assure the camera and lens worked upon purchase, and the weather has been raining and windy since so I have yet to "go out" and try my hand with the new equipment. Some of my photos are on a FB page I manage called "Portland Maine History 1786 To Present", if you would like to take a peek. This is a history of a city in pictures, mostly old, but some new as well from me and others.

I like the lowpro slingshots and almost got one but decided on case logic slr sling.

I chose it because it is much more low profile then even the LP100 and still holds my d7000 with with 70-300 mounted plus 18-55 and a prime.

Plus its about half the cost

One negative is the zipper to the main compartment is tough to get around the corners....need a 2nd hand to hold the bad while zipping

I went over to Hunt's Photo this PM and bought a LowePro 202, I was told they are phasing out the 200 model. I have not had a chance to eyeball it very good yet, let alone try out the equipment in it. When I do, I'll post a follow up. Maybe this weekend it won't rain all the time (haha), and I'll have a chance to give it and the new D3100 and lenses a workout. Again, thanks for all the replies and your recommendations. John

Valvestem, you are gonna LOVE the D3100! I have had mine since March 30th, so the new still has not worn off yet.

My kit came with the bag, both lenses, a 4 gig sd card and some other stuff.

Wait until you start playing around with the in camera editing features.

Have fun Dude.

Another New Englander, great! I was in Portland Sunday with all that heavy wind and sideways rain. It is snowing here in northern Vermont right now and its headed your way. Hopefully you can snap some shots with the D3100 between the flakes and drops!

Thanks fotojack. I went out this afternoon after work, but did not take the D3100 & 200 bag. Reason is it is still quite chilly where I live and I did not want to expose the new camera to extremes of 30 degrees this morning, and 60 plus this PM. I took my Nikon L22 and took about 50 photos of my favorite subject-buildings. With this camera when I am out on foot, I just simply slip it in my coat pocket to keep it warm so to speak.

I snagged a LowePro Slingshot 202AW and lugged it almost all day today. It is great to use, just like they say, slide it around and get the camera. I took over a hundred photos. So far I like the 202AW a lot, but would like to see some extra straps, like they have on a backpack for a rolled up light jacket or fleece. The tripod holder works good as long as it's a small tripod. I wanted a water bottle holder, but they seem to be "out of stock" everywhere, maybe they don't make 'em anymore. And the other members comments about the camera area being slightly too large is correct. I am going to look for some closed cell foam to fix up the inside a little for a snugger fit. So far the D3100 is a dream, I started using the view finder instead of LiveView, and must say I like the Viewfinder better. Some of the photos I took today can be seen on FaceBook, Portland Maine History 1786 To Present, Album#10.
Thanks, John

Try the LowePro Flipside range (Lowepro - Flipside 300) as an example.
I have one and it holds my body (D5100) with 18-55, space for my 55-200, flash, space for another lens, charger & mains lead, tablet (7") with charger lead, USB cable, cleaning cloth, filters (in cases), spare batteries (4xAA + camera) and thats all inside the main compartment.
Out side is a little more sparse, but the side pocket has space for mem cards, pens, notes etc, and a mesh on the other side for a bottle, as well as a 'holding' area for a small(ish) tripod.
