Modifications enabled with this firmware upgrade, release date January 25, 2011
  • A magenta tint was present at the bottom of still images captured at high sensitivities after shooting in live view mode or recording movies for an extended length of time. The occurrence of this magenta tint has been reduced.
  • When images captured with continuous shooting in live view mode were played back, in some very rare cases, some of the images were not properly displayed. This issue has been resolved.
  • When shooting in live view mode with AF-area mode set to Subject-tracking AF, in some very rare cases, the focus point slipped off the subject with autofocusing after the intended tracking subject had been selected. This issue has been resolved.
  • When images edited using camera retouch functions were played back in calendar playback mode, they were assigned to dates based not on the date of capture, but rather the date on which they were edited. This issue has been resolved.
  • When white balance for RAW images created using the camera’s image overlay function was fine tuned with Capture NX 2 or ViewNX 2, the images acquired a magenta cast. This issue has been resolved.
  • A portion of the error message displayed when live view mode could not be initiated because the camera’s internal temperature was too high has been revised.
  • When Noise reduction in the shooting menu is set to On, operation is as follows.
Processing to reduce noise is performed at all ISO sensitivity settings. Noise reduction is especially effective with shooting at high ISO sensitivities.
Processing to reduce noise is performed immediately after shooting in any of the situations noted below. While processing to reduce noise is performed, "Job nr" blinks in the viewfinder display. Shooting is not possible until "Job nr" is no longer displayed. The time required for noise reduction processing is roughly equal to the shutter speed used to capture the image.
    • Shooting at shutter speeds slower than approximately 8 seconds
    • Shooting at high ISO sensitivities when the internal temperature of the camera is high
  • The Help information displayed for the Noise reduction item in the shooting menu has also been revised in accordance with these modifications.

Have any updates come out to address high ISO selection in auto mode when shooting indoors with the flash on? It seems to select 1600-3200 even in good lighting with the flash on. This makes auto mode indoors useless to me, which is when I would like it to act like a point and shoot the most.

Excellent question, and one which should be sent to the Nikon engineers to resolve. This is probably something they overlooked, or it simply didn't even occur to them. Feedback from customers is essential for them to initiate firmware updates and revisions to correct these sorts of problems.

I should forward the question to Nikon, perhaps more inquiries will help. It is a known issue and mentioned in some reviews, it was the only negative I read about before purchasing. I simply use program or aperature priority when indoors. It would be nice to be able to leave it in auto for those split second/once in a lifetime shots which you don't have time to analyze.

I'm sorry, I'm very new to this. But what is the Update for? How do I get it onto my Camera or whatever I'm supposed to do? Also how do I get Notified about these updates?

Simply follow the link to the official Nikon website at the bottom of the original post and follow the instructions.
The firmware update is an update to the cameras controlling program and provides fixes to issues found since release. These can be for all manner of camera functions, the specifics are listed in the release notes (also on the website).

No worries, glad I could help.
I didn't mention anything about notification, you might be able to use RSS feeds on the Nikon site but if you're on here regularly it'll get posted. The firmaware updates aren't very frequent though.

More than likely but you can double check the firmware on your camera by pressing the Menu button, then selecting the Setup menu (wrench icon) and scrolling all the way to the bottom for Firmware Version. It will list the firmware for A, B and L.

I just bought a nikon D3100 several weeks ago, through a popular local mail order, which I think is a bargain price of RM1,634.00 which includes nikkor 18 -55mm lens & a 70-300mm zoom. I was so proud of my purchase, I was showing off m y camera & was proudly rattling off the figures when I got a big surprise. This nikon d3100 was Made in Thailand. I also came to know this camera was delivered from China. It took close to one month to be delivered. Can I through the camera's serial number know how long this camera is lying in their warehouse in China. Even though everything was intact, the camera the boxes don't have the new smell!
So far I have taken less than 50 pictures, out of the 50 pictures only two pictures surprised me, after all I was using it as a point & shoot camera. I am not going to use it as a point & shoot camera it will waste of my hard won lottery money!

Nikon came out with 1.02 firmware update, but I've been unable to use it. I can download the .exe file, but cannot open the .exe file to get the bin folder with the update. Anyone else having trouble with this? I contacted Nikon a bit ago, to see what the problem is.

No, it's Win. 7. Checked all the info at Nikon which I fit. Can download the .exe file, but cannot open it. Waiting for Nikon to reply to my query. Will post an update.

Heard back from Nikon. They say to just download the .exe file then upload to the camera via the chip. The directions say to open the .exe file, then upload the bin folder. They have contradictory info. Clicking run on the .exe file, does not open the bin folder? Confused?

What happens if you copy the .exe to the SD card and check updates from the camera?

Seems like one of the two recent firmware updates for the D7100 behaved that way. The camera side was a .bin file that got copied over, but then the second update was an .exe perhaps? Not enough coffee yet this morning...
