There are 'repair' videos on youtube but you would be trying that at your own risk. Just google 'stuck mirror D3100 repair'. And proceed at own risk, if its under warranty get it repaired professionally or if you are unsure about the repair yourself then get it done by a professional.

Google with what I gave you and you will find one suitable, I am not going to recommend anything more as it is at your own risk. I found one within 1 sec so its easy.

done a quick youtube search and found this for the D3100, although the clip does show a D700 getting repaired, it looks pretty simple from this clip but i would watch a few more and read up on it before thinking of doing it yourself, good luck.

D3100 Mirror Fix - YouTube

i wonder if this is why your friend sold it????

Take it to the nearest Nikon authorized repair shop. Better yet, take it to the shop you bought it at and ask for a new one. If you attempt the repair yourself, you will void the warranty.

Sorry that is all I can do as I for one do not have this camera and have never personally tried fixing it. Have you tried taking photos in 'mirror up' setting if the D3100 has that setting?

You say you bought this from your friend? Is there any possibility he will just take it back since it is not working properly? I think if I sold my friend a camera (or anything), I would take it back if he found it defective right away.

Not possible. Because , he bought a new D4 and he is in singapore now. I just bought it before he left. So not so possible. How much will cost to get it repaired?

I see. I don't know the cost of repair. maybe you can email a photo to Nikon and get an estimate. I have never been through the repair process. You would probably have to ship it somewhere so figure that cost in too.
I would try the mirror lock up as mentioned and see if you can observe any sticking to see if it is a mirror problem. You can also snap pictures in M mode with no lens attached and observe the mirror motion. At rest it is at a 45 degree slant. I think if it was not resting properly, you would have a viewfinder problem too. When it goes up for cleaning or for a picture, it should be flat against the top area and fully out out of view, except for the underside. I think it may not be going fully up in your case. No idea what to do if it does not go fully up, but at least you can confirm its a mirror problem and seek out more specific info.
