I'm seeing a lot of people on the site that have gotten a new D3100 recently. I'm sure a lot of you have questions on your new camera. Make sure when asking questions you are as specific as possible. Put your question in the 'Title' line on the new thread.

Lots of threads to read here about the next lens, alot is going to depend on your shooting style/objectives. If you have the kit 18-55 lens, you already have a great lens. From there, a wide angle or telephoto would be a nice compliment. Your next lens will cost between $100-$12,000. Once we know your shooting style/objectives, we can help with advice.

Hi, I recently took delivery of my new D3100 + 18-55vr and 55-200 lens. I took some photos today in Plymouth of the Americas Cup Yacht race, the weather was very overcast and grey with mist in the background, the photos came out very low contrast and and needed a lot of adjustments in PS. I have uploaded two photos one as it came out of the camera and the other altered in PS. My question is this, is there anything I could of done at the time of taking the shots to improve them straight from camera ..maybe filters.etc .

Nice shot and work in PS. As far as improvements, mist is hard to work around. There are filters for haze, but mist is obviously completely different. It would help if you posted the exif data so we can see you settings.

Would a ND filter work for haze?

Im a newbie to it all as well im still on the auto settings for now :)

I started out on apeture mode but to do so and learn it I cheated, I gave my self a place I would have time to see what the meter read in automode then switched to apeture mode and used the reading that the camera provided and it was a great expierence to learn that way, but I got it down in no time and now I am on to manual as well as the shutter priority mode. shutter seems to be my nemisis and im not really sure why. good luck with the settings and learning to take it to the next step and enjoy your camera even more once you learn the program modes.

Mine is arriving tomorrow. I shot with my friend's D90 and loved it. I used auto most of the time but used Aperture Priority I think it was to adjust depth of field for some lovely photos. I was gonna upload it but my file size is too big and it's 7:10 and I have school tomorrow so I'm too lazy to fix it now. Stay posted for the pictures. I just learned about ISO because I never understood what it was, but now I know what to use it for and how. Will post tomorrow at night after I've had a day of playing with it. ;)

Hi, i bought mine a few days back well actually my fiancee gifted it to me, a wedding gift :). Its an amazing camera. Had been shooting with my Sony DSC-W220 a point-n-shoot. It feels great to own a DSLR. I am really very excited about it.

Hi there,

I just bought my Nikon D3100 a couple of weeks ago after almost 6 months of reading reviews and comparisons. I am pleased with the photos it can shoot. What I am not pleased with is my lack of creativity, technical knowledge and the dead nature with dead colors in December :p But I guess with time and hard work, all of these will change. I currently have the 18-55mm kit lens only, and I don't think I will buy another one within the next 12 months. But who knows... I am interested in portrait photography, but without a prime lens... What I CAN afford, however, is a tripod. I love night photography with long exposure times, and a tripod is vital.
I'll get back with some pictures later. Glad to be here. You guys take care!
