I just got my d3100 a few days ago, and using manual mode. im a student and doing photography at school, in which we have to take photo's then log back to them, saying about the image, aperture, iso, and shutter speed.

i was thinking is it possible to have the feature to...

have the camera automaticly put aperture, iso, shutter speed in the file name so when i go back to the image on my computer i can see what settings i used,

or when i display the photo's on the camera, instead of telling me the date, and dimensions. it tell me aperture, iso, shutter speed??

i'm hoping this makes sense.

thanks for the help

Re: Can Someone Help On This?

I know it can be done. It's in settings somewhere....I'll let the experts tell you how to do it.

The information is embedded and when you view in viewNX, you should see it. You can also change the view on the camera screen to see it. On the D3100 I believe you push the bottom of the circular toggle switch on the back to change the view

I don't know of a way to make the file name show this data.

But no need really, the camera already embeds all that info (and greatly more) into the Exif data in the image file.

Photo editor programs all will have menu to show this Exif information for the current image. Raw processors in particular always put it in front of your face.

Also the camera will show it on the images in the camera... Just push the up/down arrows on the joy stick button on the back, and it cycles through several views of more data, including this.

Your school can tell about this, maybe they just have not gotten to it yet.

You can use a utility software like Breeze Systems Downloader Pro to rename files while copying from your storage device to include capture info. Downloader Pro has defined file naming tokens for aperture {K2}, ISO {k} and shutter speed {K3}.

If you are using Lightroom, you can use see this information via the Loupe info selection. It displays the capture info over the image you are working with. See the screenshot below where you can see the Loupe info (top left) and the location of the menu option to turn it on.

Have you considered putting the capture information (and a watermark) as part of your output file? Below is an example of what I mean. I do that at times for ease of use. I have an output process defined in Lightroom that takes advantage of a plugin called LR/Mogrify 2. Mogrify was discussed in this thread.
