i want to know which lense is best on D3100 ,, 35mm or 50mm for portrait

i saw that the 35mm in crop sensor has the same view of 50mm on full frame .. even though i've read MTf charts and 35mm is better in edges .. and in the pic. 50mm has soften edges and blury i liked it .. idon't know i need your advice guys ..

Either would be a good lens on your camera...I have one of the 50mm F1.8 D that goes well on my camera...

Which ever you choose needs to be an AF-S lens other wise it wont auto focus on your cam...

I just recently had to decide which one out of the 35 1.8g, or the 50 1.8g I wanted to be given as a gift.
I chose the 35 after a lot of thought, I think I made the right decision for me, but your needs could be different to mine.
I will eventually get the 50 at some stage also.

About a year ago I was in your same shoes. I knew I would want both eventually but I had to make a choice on which one first. I have had the 35 for about a little over a year now. I recently purchased the 50mm 1.8g. I love both and see a reason for both. At first, I was a bit worried about having very similar lenses but they both seem to come in handy. The 35 has been great for portraits and just about anything. IMO, the bokeh is smoother in the 50 but still great in the 35. One of the difference I see is that you need more room for the 50. You have to step a little bit back for it. In the 35, you can use it indoors more often because of the room. You may think that it is not much more room but it really is. I am no professional. I am just a hobbiest myself. I still tend to use the 35 more often. Good luck. I know it will be a hard choice to make.

Between the two -

IQ : 50mm is ever so slightly better than the 35mm (hardly noticeable, but that exists)

Upgrade to Fx: 35mm is a DX lens, 50mm is FX

Usability: I find the 35mm too be a little more useable than the 50mm unless you need this to shoot single portraits.
By that i mean one person or a max of 2 heads in a shot..
anything more you will find it a little difficult to accommodate in the frame without stepping back quite a bit.

this could/should be the main deciding factor cos it is quite difficult to use the 50mm as an all around lens due to the fact that on a DX body, the 50mm seems too narrow.

as a dedicated portrait lens, the 50mm is quite unbeatable at that price

Price: Not much of a difference

I use the NIKKOR 50mm F/1.8G AF-S lens and it's great for portraits but either focal length will do really.

For portraits, I would get the 50mm 1.8g (75mm Fx equivalent) over the 35mm 1.8g. The 35mm has about 50% more barrel distortion than the 50mm. The 50mm will give you more control over background blur.
