They both share:
  • 11 point autofocus
  • no in-body focus motor
  • image sensor cleaning
  • 3 fps continuous shooting
  • 3" TFT LCD (230k pixels)
  • no bracketing

So if you want video, live view, and some extra megapixels, get the D3100. If you don't care about video and just want a simple, inexpensive DSLR, get the D3000.

Nice break down between the two. The video does nothing for me but I do like the live view capability. I have used it with my tripod and it allows me to zoom in digitally and assist with focusing. I am not sure it would be worth the extra $150 for just that but along with a few extra megapixals I think it is worth the extra money. JMHO

Phil - 700 what?
They're currently £310 ($~$480) new with aan 18-55mm 'kit' lens.

Also - not the thread to ask about primes (as this ones about comparisons), but the 35mm f/1.8G or 50mm f/1.8G will be fine for the D3100.
