Strange UFOs in my pics

Do you have a UV or clear filter on the lens? Direct light at night can make ghosts appear as light bounces off the coating of the front lens element and is reflected against the underside of the filter.

Again, example images would help.

Sorry, guys, I can't seem to download a pic and I have been trying for a while now. I must not have the skill necessary. I am sure the problem is lens flare directly above bright light in my night time pics. I can see using a hood during the day, but at Night? What does one do to minimize the affect?

Not shoot towards a light? Hold your hand over the lens but out of the field of view to block it? Remove any UV or clear filters? Buy a new lens? Change the angle to the subject?

Any or all of these are possible, but it depends on the extent to which you want to eliminate the problem.
