ML-L3 remote not compatible with 3100?

Google searches say that it doesn't have the infrared to use the remote, even though the d3000 does. I tried to use it, and the camera counted down and made the shutter noise, but no picture saved. Is there any way to use this with the d3100? Thanks

I believe the 3100 uses the "Wired" remote MC-DC2. It plugs into the accessory port on the side.

Will this is frustrating. Rather than begin a new thread on an old camera, I revived this one.
Some time ago, I bought my father a (new then) D3100. He just takes family pics really, nothing more than that. Today he was taking a group shot of us and using the self timer. I figured I'd buy him a Nikon ML-L3 remote as the one I have works great on My D40 through my D7100.

Before ordering, I check compatibility first. For some reason this remote is compatible with a D3000 and D3200 but not the bastard D3100 middle child! It is very annoying when companies do things like this :(

Just venting more than anything really as I hunt for a cheap wireless option for him.

:(

Is anyone using this: JJC setup

I could always just get this Yongnuo RF-603-N3 setup and he can play with OCF as well...
