Brightness of the Display (D5000)

Hi All,

I am not sure if I am alone with this problem. I have been using Nikon D5000 for a while. I mostly use the Manual Mode in it and very rarely use the Automatic Mode. In both the modes, When i verify the taken picture on the camera's screen, I would feel that it is dark. But then, when I see the same in a laptop it would look fine. Most often, I try to increase the lighting and retake the picture, which would end up too bright when I see in the computer.

So, it looks like I need to find a way to adjust / correct the lighting of my Camera Screen. How can I do that? or is there is anything else I should do?

- Thank you.

Hi tamirisadp - welcome!

If I'm not mistaken, the D3000 and D5xxx series cameras do not adjust the Live View (the camera screen) picture if the shot was taken with a flash. It shows the exposure without the flash factored in, which would mean a darker picture is diplayed than was actually taken. The true exposure will be shown on your computer, however.

If you are noticing this only when you use a flash, that's probably it. Unfortunately I don't believe there is a camera adjustment you can make to remedy this. The workaround is to check the histogram, which will give you an accurate representation of your exposure.

One other thing you might try is to turn the movie mode off when you shoot still pictures (Shooting Menu > Movie Settings > Manual Movie Settings = OFF). That could also be a factor.

Hope this helps!

:)

Press the Menu button, go into the Custom Settings Menu, choose the option, "Monitor Brightness" and adjust to your liking.

See page 165 of the D5000 User Manual
