Hi I am a novice to photography and I want to shoot the stars I have a Nikon d5000 , can someone help me with a step by step process to shooting stars im having a hard time to understand how to set up a exposure time thanks

First off Welcome to the forum. The first thing you need to do it to read the manual. Use this link to download it

Shooting Stars is a more advanced photo technique so you might want to learn a few basics first. Things like Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO. The exposure triangle and how each one effects the final photo.

The first order of business is do you have a tripod? Mandatory when shooting the stars

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.

I agree with Don, learn the basics first before trying shooting for the stars. This could save you a lot of heartache.

Also, what lenses do you have? You want some fast glass. And in addition to a good tripod, you will need some kind of remove release or to learn how to use the delayed shooting timer.

Thanks for your reply , currently am looking to buy a tripod and I have a 18-55mm lens and a sigma 150-600 , I don't have a manual for my camera and I can't figure out how to do the 20-30 second exposure . I am trying to learn a bit before I do any star shooting thanks

Nikon D5000 Manual.

To manually adjust the shutter speed independently the Mode dial must be set to M (manual) or S (shutter priority). Turning the Command Wheel will then adjust shutter speed.
