:rolleyes-new: thanks for reply. then the auto fous drive is soemthing different than
what is involved with "auto focus" inside my D-3000 as came from factory?
is it something i have to "add" to my camera?
yes, certainly can manually focus but eyes aren't as good as they once were
and can't get great shots like used to.
not that computer/digital savvy but have the artistry behind the lens.
I must sound like a technical idiot.

The issue with focus motors isn't germain just to Tamron lenses, by the way. You'll notice, as you look at specs for different lenses by 3rd party makers, they'll usually say whether there's a focus motor in the lens or not... Although, you'll probably notice the price difference first.. :) Lenses with focus motors cost more...

As you move up in price with Nikon cameras... the bodies have focus motors so are much more adaptable to older lenses that didn't have motors.. I believe the first body in Nikon's line that has the focus motor is the D90...

You are not any kind of idiot... these are all good questions. Your 3000 and my D5100 are Autofocus capable cameras. To utilize AF, you need a Compatible Lens. Anything in the Nikon Line designed AF-S will autofocus fine with our cameras. I am not sure of all the designations on 3rd party lens's but the common denominator is our Camera Body does not have an AF Motor (cheaper, lighter, smaller). The Lens must have the AF motor for AF to work in our camera's. There is nothing we can add (that I know of) to AF with other lens's. I hope this helps clear it up...
