Clean D300s available locally, 160K shutter count, Under $250.
I'm interested in a second DX body to compliment my D7100. Remote camera for shooting hockey/soccer near the nets.

Do it?

That's a lot of shutter count, but if it all works well I wouldn't pass it up for that price. Even if the low light capability isn't that good compared to the D7100 (I have no idea if it is or not) it would still be a great additional camera to have at that price. Heck, I would probably buy it and then just send it in for a new shutter and tune-up for that price.

Then again, I didn't realize I had a camera problem until just recently: D5100, 2 x D7100, D600, D750, Df. Hello, my name is George and I'm a cameraholic.

We prefer the term "aficionado". Ok granted we're pretty sure it's Italian for addict, but it just sounds so much nicer. Lol

As for the D300 - a lot of that would be based on what you shoot, at least for me. If your not doing much cropping and don't really need low light then I'd say it would be worth it. It's a heavy duty body with a fast frame rate.

Shutter count seems high to me. I'm thinking the D300s is only rated for 150K, it was later cameras that notched that up closer to 250k?

Just a quick google check, Nikon says they tested the D300s to 150k Nikon | Imaging Products | D300S - Reliability - how much does a new D300s shutter cost anyway?

Great camera, but I'm thinking you could end up with newer D7100 and no near term shutter replacement and still stay cost effective. As soon as you replace the D300s shutter, you're in the D7100 price range.

I'd pay no more than $175 if it is body only and really would not grab it at all with that shutter count. It's not just the shutter count but overall wear and tear that it indicates.

I recently, well 6 months ago, bought a craigslist D300s that looks and feels NIB for $300, 30k shutter clicks, nikon grip, VR kit lens, extra batteries, case.

Pretty much what RocketCowboy said. If I were looking at that deal, I would at least entertain the thought of another D7100 instead. Saw one on eBaaay for $575 with under 3K shots. That's a lot less shots for a body that is likely rated for a higher count. Plus you can share batteries and memory cards.

Great input - thank you.
I do see how there would be more wear than just the shutter, buttons, etc.
How much would a new shutter run through NikonUSA?

Looking back at all of this, and the cost of shutter plus camera, it sure makes a whole lot more sense on the D7100 options.

Only thing that might make the 300 a better option is the frame rate.

The 7100 is a great camera, except for that tiny buffer.

So if you need something that will shoot a long burst and you don't need low light or much cropping the 300 is worth a look.

Otherwise if the 7100 is a better option in most cases.

Price does seem a bit high for the shutter count though

Joe,

I have the D300, awesome camera for sports in bright light......perfect.

I wouldn't even consider shooting NCAA hoops with it due to poor ISO performance IMHO above ISO 800....in other words even with my super fast glass I'll miss action shots....

Save up for the D500 would be my take or wait till they hit the KEH etc market.

D300S would be nice for outdoor soccer for sure.....with MB D10 attached it can crank. For hockey you will be disappointed I think.

It's only a $250 gamble tho so tough call.

The D500 is what you want but nobody is giving them away.....

Yep, D500 is on the radar in a bit for sure. I thought the 300s was better indoors. My miss.

Thanks!

No reason to panic, you kill it with what you got now.......

You've built a nice collection of fast dx glass why not be patient and get the camera that is worthy?

D300s is awesome but indoors where you need a quick shutter? = MEH
