d300 custom settings

Hi, I just bought a pre-owned D300 yesterday. I believe the owner has set some customized setting as I see the info screen said 'custom A'. I am generally ok with the setting he made except the continuous shooting mode.

I go to the menu - custom setting-control-CL mode shooting speed and set 6 fps. But when I press the info button again, it shows 2.5 fps! What is the problem? I search the web but somehow couldn't locate any site that teaches how. They only show how you can switch between CL and CH.

Thank you

Re: d300 need help

Go into the menu and try to reset the CL mode to something else........say 4 fps. Then check info again to see if it changes. Seems to me the 6 fps is for the CH mode......

I did and although in the menu it shows 6 Fps, when I press the info button, it shows 3'fps. I was told it is due to light level. I will try outdoor to
See how

OK, it just dont work. I got to press and hold to the 2 buttons on top of the camera. Qual and exposure compensation (both got a green dot next to it) and the setting reset itself. Learn it from somewhere in the web.

That did the trick. However, now got to adjust whatever I need. One of feature I thought wasnt too bad is the auto ISO. Will try to see how to do that but being able to adjust is also something interesting. I will think about this latter.

I read about AFC priority. You may wish to set it to release focus rather than the default focus to increase speed.

Re: d300 need help

I realized when you reset, the image quality went back to norm but I shoot in RAW. Once I set it back to RAW, the same problem again. I have tried all sort of things the whole afternoon. This is really an intelligent camera that out smart me. I think I need more time to tame it. Now I think I am able to set the camera to raw mode and achieve 6 fps.

I thought I should share it here so that those with the same problem would know what to do. The raw must be 12 bit! auto ISO is OK. The thing about auto ISO is that it controls you. I want to find out how to be able to toggle between auto ISO and manual without having to going into manual.

Any hint?

Re: d300 need help

Dear Guys, I bought my D300 pre-owned and I do have a copy of the manual (hard copy). I was thinking of downloading a soft copy in my computer so that I can read it as and when I need to make reference.

However, it seems that you need password to download! To register with Nikon, you need to register the product with them during warranty period. Being pre-owned, there is no way I could do that. Is there a site where I can do download?

Thank you

On the U.S. website, you can download the manual to read. Registering allows you to download the manual to print. I'm not sure if you were looking for an English (or Spanish) manual though.

In Singapore where I am located, it don't seem to work. I have emailed them but yet to respond. Well, the is a site to download the manual, so not more an issue.

I just want to be able to read it whenever I got the time and not having to carry the booklet.

Thank you anyway.

My D200 is pre owned, and I registered it with Nikon. They don't care who you bought it from, just as long as you register it.

Jack, I'm not 100% sure but I think your statement would only apply if the camera or lens in questions were distributed by Nikon Canada. I did enquire about a lens repair (bought from ebay) and Nikon Canada replied that if the lens was not originally sold here in Canada they might refuse to repair it… I suspect Nikon USA could have the same kind of service policy. So buyer beware.

Yeah, my camera was bought in Canada, so I registered it with Nikon Canada. I didn't have any problems registering it here. But I understand your point.

Just to close off this thread and for the benefit of others who may experience the same 'problem'. Anthony is correct.

If your FPS is that low with a D300s, it's probably in 14-bit RAW mode. I would check the compression format as well.

By setting to 12-bit raw, I am ok
