I need a quick answer, guys, on how many numbers there are in a D300 serial number. I also need an American model and a Canadian model to see if there is a difference in the first 3 numbers that denote country designation. Thanks.

Hey where did ya go?? Probably to bed :) You "old folks" need your rest :)

LOL...no, Sam, I was watching the hockey game. :) Unfortunately, my Flames lost in a shootout - 3 - 2. :(

The reason I asked about the numbers is because there's a guy here in Calgary that is selling his for $600, has less than 10k on the shutter count. He gave me a number of 212922-406061. That didn't sound right to me.

All my numbers have been seven numbers, guy must be looking at something else. Have him send you a pic of the serial # plate on the bottom of the camera.

Yeah, that's what I found out, too, Vin. So I asked the guy again for the right number and he apologized (he thought I was interested in a lens he had for sale) and sent me the right number for the camera. It started with a 5 (Canada) so I figured it was legit. anyway...moot point, as I couldn't get the $600, so the deal fell through. :( I'll just have to wait until another good deal comes along.

Not to worry Jack the D300's prices are slowly coming down. The D300s prices are staying firm in fact they are going up. Reason is the D300s is the last semi pro DX body Nikon will make with the 51 focus points, and all the rest of the features that make the D300/ 300s so great a camera. There will not be a D400 there will be an upgrade to the D7000 and that's all. Nikon is going full speed ahead with FX. Think about it when was the last Pro( gold ring) DX lens it was the 17-55mm 2.8 there hasn't been any since. The last true pro DX body was the D2Xs which came out in 2006 I believe. It's replacement was the D3 however it was fX. I don't believe Nikon is going to come out with anymore consumer dX glass either.

The last time I used a D300S to blast off a few "Here check out this camera" shots...my only thought was...cool this viewfinder is bad @ss! :)

Mine is but a D300 and has been a great camera, the problems start when you go fx with some good glass, it's not getting a lot of use for me anymore. Maybe I should consider getting a D700 for my 2nd.

Good idea Bill I use my D700 constantly. It's one body I wouldn't sell. The d700 is just to damn good to let go.

never say never, if they come out with a 7100/7200 camera then the DX line is still quite strong with the 3200/5200/7100/7200, I guess maybe the overlap with the G lens is enough, that Nikkor might just kill two sticks with one stone anyway... like the newer 35 1.8,, etc. 50 mm 1.8 G

Oh Nikon will come out with a D7000 replacement. They wouldn't come out with a D300s replacement. The D300s was the end of the line. The 35 1.8 is a DX lens but far from a Gold Line pro lens like 17-55 2.8. Like I said Nikon has not made a pro DX Lens in years.

Now that you've got the holy trinity lenses you would just love how the D700 work with them. It's pure magic. Seems these lenses were made for it. You would certainly not regret it and you could work FX with smaller files… :)
