traded D600 for D3s with my friend

I took his old D3s (shutter was replaced last year) Im happy but also a bit sad. the D600 had great resolving power. but those huge file sizes were never useable and slowed down my editing workflow. its something you want to have, but never had the need for it. the clients pcs were having a hard time viewing them as well. so as much as I would like to have its not realistic in the wedding world. I get high iso capability and thats a plus. when My d3 was in repair, I used this D3s and man was it fun to shoot at iso 8000 on the dance floor. it looked like iso 4000 on the D3 (which I also have) the only loss is the D600 1080p video which I would like to have since I do plan on getting into videography as well. I can make more money beeing able to do both. after coming back into the wedding industry again (2013) I decided I will no longer do private wedding but will be a freelance photog for other photogs. much more profitable for me. less headaches less running around. I stay hot since I shoot a lot of weddings.

happy but I also lost a little. but hes my best friend. if I ever need the 1080p (yes the D3s does 720p I know) I can always borrwo the D600. also smartphones do a decent job for video (not for weddings obviously)

well its done. he took the D600 because he wants to sell his nex6 and lens set. he wants it for his vacations. but the D600 will give superior IQ and he can just take 3 primes and get the images he needs with his 20/50/85 and use dx if he needs reach.

Good luck with it. As much as you seemed to like the D600 it always seemed like you held it in some contempt in various posts due to its shutter problems, and Nikon's subsequent mishandling of them. Hopefully this will be a happier marriage.

Thank you guys. I learned to live with the shutter issue. I whined about it but what can I do. Just a whiner. Mr paka paka.

I felt that with the d600/d3, iso 4-5000 was my limit for the dance floor but now i can shoot at 8000, i feel free to explore much more regarding creativiting and catching ambient. We shoot in really harsh lighting. as long as youre spot on with exposure, pr even just a bit over the pics look great. It isnt iso 800 but nothing close like what superia 1600 looked like in the film days. Biggest plus is the instantaneous response compared to the d600 and sculpted one piece body. I think down the line I may just still buy a d600/610 again. I would like to learn the video aspect of wedding capture.

I'm sooo jealous! Congrats!!!:frog:

dont be buddy. everyone has a chance. wither the tech will trickle down or youll get aused one later on. when the time is right.

I wanted something to shoot past the iso 6400 limit of the D600/D3. my friend is the one whos really living it up. he has the D4 and D4s. shooting nice and quite clean at iso 20000, in complete darkness. man compare that with film. where the hell is all this going. theres no limit in sight.

Your right! :) But we all are looking forward to moving up in models and lenses, and sometimes I'm jealous of those who have managed to acquire something I'm hoping to someday move up to too! Lol :D
Yes the D4s is one those models I hope to someday own. But that is much further down the road and also much farther out of reach! Lol :D

Anyway, congrats again buddy! It sounds like you made a great trade all the way around! :D

Yea, we all want new tech but well never be happy. we are all perfectionists one way or another. if we get the D4s, when something else comes the D4s will be meh down the line. how sad. look at the D2x. it was the best of the best for its time. now, its hard to find a buyer for one. so sad. the forgotten stars.

we say "if I had that X (X is for newest camera/lens/gadget), I could...I will...my pictures will..." we fantasize about the gear and focus less on our ability. but these new tech make our lives easier. obviously im not only talking about photo gear. but you know what, the new camera gives me such a push in motivation and that is enough to try and be more creative. it psyches you up, gets you out of the same ole same ole you were doing.

thanks for the kind words everyone.
I have a wedding in 2 weeks. I cant wait.

How is the camera working out for you? Some of the things that I've noticed right of the back aside from the faster fps, is the battery life. They seem to last forever. Enjoy with your new equipment for your wedding events. That is probably much more suited for your work.

Whats up Glenn. camera is nice. my friend says his D3s D4 and D4s all have this issue where sometimes it just wont release the shutter. the camera seems to have found focus or is pretty much there and basically locked on it, but it hesitates to release the shutter. I also experienced this first hand. was with my friend shooting at the ceremony. the guy comes to break the cup (jewish ceremony) I shoot all the family wide and he shoots tele. he gave me his d3s and I came to shoot him breaking and beforehand practiced a practice shot. all went fine. the moment came, it locked focus from the way the image was clear in the viewfinder but it didnt release.

I had the same experience last week when I shot it at a bar mitzvah. the boy was reading his speech and then at the end the parents came to hug him. I was shooting like nothing the whole time, firing off tons of frames, came to shoot the hug and it hesitated to release. and ther was tons of light. I shot in a restaurant in the afternoon with windows all around.

not why its so and I now have unrest with the camera. now I know there will be critical times I cant trust the camera and will have to be on my guard and have my finger close to the camera focus mode and slip the lever up to manual to get a few shots and hope it catches focus.

tomorrow shooting an event. full daylight. someones back yard event in a big villa. ill let you know. cheers Glenn. getting some shut eye

Wait...if I read all this right you traded a D600 for a D3s. If that is correct I am the most jealous man out there! I shoot with a D3 and I have dreams of shooting with a D3s. I have no real interest in the D4 or D4s. You can never even find a good used D3s now a days. It's easier to find a used D4 than a D3s. You just made the trade of the decade on that one!!

Congratulations!! Hope you'll be very happy with this :)

Mine had problems focussing directly at the sun a few times (peeping out behind a girls shoulder or similar) - I thought it might be the lens but maybe not..?

Yes a 6 month old D600 with mack diamond warranty as well. a grip and 4 extra batteries. I got a D3s that looks like it was in iraq and came back, replaced shutter, hot shoe that doesnt work completely ok all the time with out fiddling with it because it had a prior hit there. and the AF sometimes just doesnt want to work or lock a shot. so the trade was pretty fair if you ask me. D4 is also great as the continuous af mechanism is just stellar.

Its nice to be able to shoot to 12800 iso. I usually use it on the dance floor at iso 8000 and its just great. another thing I noticed about it is the images are sharper than the D3, which I also own.

Congratulations!! Hope you'll be very happy with this :)

Thanks Wud. I hope so too. just hope it holds as the shutter was replaced last year. I am having a problem with exposure with it. 2 shots right after the other have different exposures with the same settings. well see how that goes.

I think I will put it in the lab and have them reset the AF mechanism. I had the D3 go bonkers when I was doing family formals and it just would not lock. the lab just reset it and its ok for now. but these two cameras have their battle wound scars on them. they are tanks but beat up tanks that some damage.

Yeah sounds like something could use a reset somewhere.

The D3 are solid! I am so amazed still. I love that camera to the moon and back :-D Hope its just a minor problem which can easily be fixed.
