My Digital Photography Equipment Evolution

Looking back on how my equipmet have started and evolved as my passion in photography continues. So many lenses that I have tried and sold over the years. I thought of downsizing but somehow they keep on growning. It is so hard to let go on my current lenses until something new and improve is introduced.

I thought of sharing what I have gone through, I'm not sure if someone went through similar experience.

Going back when I shifted from my D80 to D700 in 2009. My first pro lens was the 24-70mm f2.8 and was quickly followed by the 70-200mm f2.8 VRI, Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro lens and Nikon 50mm f1.4D.

Later added the Rokinon 85mm f1.4 manual focus lens, and Nikon 24-120mm f4 lens.

Fast forward to 2011 which added the D7000, sold the 70-200mm f2.8 VRI and upgraded to the VRII. Sold the Tamron 90mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4D, Rokinon 85mm f1.4 lens and got the Sigma 85mm f1.4 HSM lens.

Fast forwad to 2013/2014. Sold the D700 and got the D800E and D3s. Added the Nikon 105mm f2.8 VR, 300mm f4 AFS, 28mm f1.8G, 50mm f1.8G, 85mm f1.8G, Zeiss 135mm f2, SB900 and sold the 24-120mm f4 lens.

Not included in the picture are the D800E and 50mm f1.8G.

So, for those of you who have thought that they are good to go with your current equipment, NAS will always strike and it doesn't appear to end. ::what::

NAS: there is no cure, and the only relief causes the recurring episodes to likely be more severe.

WM

It is all good WM. I am a willing victim! ;)

I explored the DX lenses too such as the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8, Tokina 12-24mm f4, then explored the FX primes including the Nikon 24mm D, 50mm D both f1.4 & F1.8, and 85mm f1.8D based on Ken Rockwells recommendations. I was a fool for following his suggestions especially by just shooting jpegs only.

I have also invested on studio equipment and now I am thinking of whether to dump the golden boxes or keep em since the take up some space.

I know what you mean when you say there is no cure.

I think that at the back of my mind is that I am still hoping to do full time pro photography in the future but I know for a fact is that once I do that, photography will be less enjoyable for me. I have just about every tools that I can think of to cover most events or types of photography. I'll just keep them for now until the day comes when I have to give up my equipment and stick with a point and shoot.

That day- I'll be dead, and in my Coffin. I will ask my wife to set the camera for 5-second intervals and then ask each guest to take 5 seconds to make their good-bye to me. I'm guessing my last roll of Kodachrome will do.

I would think about the joy you could bring to others by the gift of having such great equipment and what creative endeavors you could achieve with it. There is the personal element of fun, but there is also expanding your sphere of creativity to bring the joy of photography to others through your work. You have great equipment, and take great images, and so why not put that to work?

Thank you. I do occasionally accept request to photograph special events around my community but not as a full time job. I only do it depending on my job schedule. I know my limitations and sometimes certain events does require an assistant or two to help out with the coordination and processing. I do prefer it this way since I hate post processing due to the condition of my right hand. It is very painful for me to use a mouse.

I'm afraid to document my lens journey, my wife would kill me :). I've slowed my lens turnover, it is definitely an evolution.

Rick - my wife is fed up with me already. She finally got tired of arguing and just let me do whatever. She probably figured that its better to spend my money instead of going to clubs and drinking with the boys. ;)
