Hello all, I'm a complete novice at photography but, I have been learning. Recently, on my latest excursion, when I click the trigger to snap a shot, it keeps making a focusing sound or a shutter sound; something of that nature and I'll keep pressing it and eventually it will snap the picture. What is this? Is my camera broken? Or are my settings just off? I have it on automatic. please help! thank you!

Well, maybe you have a lens with the VR (vibration reduction) that turns on when you half depress the shutter. It should stabilize the camera to prevent blurred shots for longer shutter speeds. Or it has trouble finding the focus depending on your focus target and in-camera focus selections.

If you have a user manual, this is where you would find answers to these kind of questions.

Welcome..There are a couple of reasons why this is happening....[1] your to close to your subject [All lens have a minimum focus distance] 2 you or your subject are moving causing the camera to refocus...

And as Marcel said your manual is wealth of information....Another good learning tool is you tube..
