Autofocus dead

Dear all,

I have a D200 since 2006 which was in very good condition until yesterday!

The AF does not detect focus anymore, which leads the lens focus sweeps over the whole range until it stops by not having found any focus. If I go to manual focus, I always have the in-focus dot on, never the arrows, as if it was always in focus. So it seems something is wrong with the sensors, but the motor control seems to work.

I have tried with several lenses (two IF's and an old 50mm f:1.8 with no focusing motor), same result.

The camera did not fall between the working and non-working condition (and never had any fall anyway)

Is my body dead?

Did you try a reset? If it happens with all lenses and you get a constant focus confirmation even when not in focus your cam's AF is to blame. Maybe something obstructs it or there dirt or something. Its detection must directly bounce back to have constant focus or some part died.

I don't know what all is possible on the D200 but if you switch focus points or move them to other ends, is the same happening?

Hi,

Yes, I have tried changing the focus point (there are 11 available) as well as various focus modes. Same result :(
It seems the whole phase shift detection is dead.

How do you make a "strong" reset? I only know the soft reset (press two green point buttons for a couple of seconds)
Also, where is located the AF sensor so that I look at eventual dust?

Thanks!

Btw, maybe a silly question but the D200 does not have a function to lock focus does it?

About a hard reset you'll have to see if someone else knows that.

Buy a new one from KEH I just got one for $139 in great condition to replace my old one, I'm sure it will cost more than that just get to fixed.

Yes, I tried cleaning the contacts, of course.
The shop told me this is a repair of about 300€, the value of a good condition D200 on the market.

Time for buying a new body I think. I will keep this one for heavy time lapses :)
