Help! Lens error!

I am rarely on this site, mostly because for the past year and a half I've had a mangled leg, so not much chance to shoot anything.

But I just got knee surgery, and tonight wheeled out onto to the porch to take some pics of the folks who are helping me while they built a bonfire. Got some decent pics, but all of a sudden it says, "Lens error. Try again after turning the camera off and on."

I did that, up to and including taking the battery out, and nothing. :sorrow:

Any idea what to do aside from sending it off to Nikon? (And since I bought the camera in India, am I going to have problems getting it fixed here in the US?)

Thanks, Karen

If the camera is grey market (not made in the USA), Nikon probably won't allow it to be repaired by them. But there are other camera repair facilities - some better than others - that would be able to help.

I'm not familiar with the Coolpix line. Can the lens be removed from the body? If so, clean the contacts. Look inside to see if the shutter or mirror is stuck. Does the battery compartment look clean, or are there signs of battery acid residue?

Someone else more knowledgeable than me should be along to offer you additional info.

Welcome back. Is this the same camera you had the issue with back in 2017 in the post "Viewfinder window out"? Did you ever get the viewfinder issue resolved (you haven't communicated with us since then)? If it is the same camera, it likely needs repair or replacement.

@Bikerbrent You have to be a detective. :) She originally posted in the D3300 section and that camera was broke. She never said what the outcome was with her viewfinder issue... NOW she's posted in the Coolpix section... The Error message she posted is a Coolpix Error. A borked D3300 doesn't give the error message she reported... It appears she replaced the D3300 camera with a CoolPix camera and has now borked that camera also.

Stuff I just read suggests that 'lens error'. means the lens is probably stuck. Is the lens stuck that you can tell? If so, maybe you can figure out how to fix it.
