How often does Nikon upgrade cameras?

Hi,

my brother has a Coolpix P900 and I've been looking at buying one for myself. As I understand it this model is now around nine months old and I was wondering if anyone knows when an upgrade is likely, maybe to something like a P910 as a new model?

Does Nikon upgrade their stock after, say, 12 months...and might it be worth me waiting until next spring to see if they do so?

If you like the P900, but are wanting something a little nicer, you should give some serious consideration to the Sony Cyber-shot RX10.

nikon had some problem stocking this unit early on and just recently has been able to keep them in stock. my guess 2017. why wait for an upgrade? if you brother likes his, get the camera.
you guys can compare learn on the same camera.

Hi Nikonpup,

yes, I'll probably go for one in the 'sales' early next year. It's a bit like the early days of home computers...if you constantly wait for something newer or improved to come along then you miss out on what's available 'now'.

It's a 'big' purchase for me so not something that I want to be changing within a year or so...this could easily be the last camera I ever buy.

Even in a sale the prices in the UK mean that quite a few of the cars I've bought over my lifetime will have each cost me less than this camera.

erm, I'm sure I posted replies to MikeW & Horoscope Fish yesterday but I can't see them listed here.

basically I wrote: 'thanks for the input'.

The Sony camera suggested only has a 50x zoom and I'm taking lots of photos of ships between 4 and 7 miles offshore so I wanted something more.

I've had a Lumix FZ70 (60x zoom) for a year or so and that was OK but it took too long to focus at maximum zoom, especially if there was a bit of mist around the horizon. So I've sold the Lumix and I'm now looking at the P900.

I'm also thinking of buying a P900 although as a supplemental camera as I have a D5500. I also live in the UK and money is a factor too - so I am in a similar situation. If you are prepared to buy a P900 from a non-UK source, i.e. a grey import, have a discount code and are registered with a cashback site, it is currently (as of New Years Day) possible to buy a P900 for the effective price of £380. The only thing stopping me at the moment is that I need to wait for some money to show up in my bank account.

I have bought several items from two such sites based in the Far East and the item has arrived within three days by UPS. If you are worried about being ripped off (though the sites have high trust scores) you can pay by PayPal which gives an additional layer of protection.

I should point out that the documentation may be in Chinese and the camera may only have English and Chinese language options but that is not a problem for me.

I don't know if there are rules forbidding links to merchants but if you are interested, PM me, I'll send you details.

If you buy it, it will probably be upgraded tomorrow whereas if you don't buy it, it probably won't be upgraded for a while. At some point, any camera will be discontinued and/or upgraded. If it meets your needs now, and will do so for the future, then buy it and enjoy the photos you will take.

Hi Okulo,

I've bought things from Hong Kong before though generally lower-priced items such as computer bits. I wouldn't want to risk it for something over 300 pounds (Sterling) as there would be import taxes to pay. I'd rather wait a few months and buy from a UK source, all taxes already paid.

Hi Don Kuykendall & Camera Fun,

there's no rush to get the camera, the weather's a bit bleak now for photgraphs at extreme zoom and is likely to be that way for another 6 - 8 weeks (with the occasional good day thrown in).

The sort of upgrade I'm thinking of might be along the lines of a bigger sensor coupled with a 100x zoom, etc, so not something that I could fix with a download patch.

It would be a case of selling the camera that I'd just bought for a couple of hundred pounds (sterling) loss and then buying the next one that I'd really, really want.

Regards
Peter
