L610 in video mode - noisy zoom

When shooting a video, I have noticed the noise of the zoom motor coming through on to the sound track. Is this normal?

Yes, both focus and zoom get into the audio track if you are using the stock microphone. I bought an expensive Roed external mic that mounts on the hot shoe, and it still picks up the focus and zoom noises. So, you have to stick to manual focus and slow zooming to keep it quiet.

Thanks for that, BC. Where is the hot shoe? I gather it must have a terminal going to the sound circuit. Is it possible to buy an extension cable so that the socket is off the camera? (It will not be the standard hot shoe extension because of this special extra terminal, I presume).

The hot shoe is where the flash normally goes. The microphone is not connected to the camera with the hot shoe connections, however, there is a wire running from the mic to the jack on the side of the camera. You certainly can get a longer wire and put the microphone further off camera... even handheld like a news reporter if that's the kind of video you are doing.

Hah, I am so sorry. All this time I thought we were talking about a D610, not the L610. My mistake... sorry to waste your time. That's the problem when I see new threads in the side box and don't notice in which section of the forum it's posted.
