Coolpix L820 Batteries

Hi from a new (newbie member).

I am only usually into holiday snap type of photographs but hope to widen my horizons and this is my first ever Nikon model.

I hope you don't mind a very basic question about the types of battery that can be used on the L820. I had already purchased 8 Energizer AA 2400 mAh NimH batteries before I got the camera and so was dismayed to see that only the Nikon rechargeables were listed as suitable in the manual. As 8 of these batteries plus the official charger from Nikon would cost not far short of what I paid for the camera I wondered if anyone has experience of using standard NimH batteries instead of the recommended ones and would there be and danger to the camera.

Thanks in advance for any advice and I hope you don't think my question is too trivial for this forum.

Thanks Steve,

I actually emailed Nikon support to ask the same question but as you would expect they said they would not recommend them.

It was really good to hear from an obviously experienced photographer who has been using them successfully.

Thanks again.

Regards

Phil

No problem. Enjoy your L820. It's a great bridge camera. If you plan to shot outside in sunlight you might want to consider a LCD adapter that turns your LCD screen into a view finder. I did a review on one here. I'll try to find it.

I have sony NimH battaries with 2400mAH rating as stand by for nikon coolpix L820 original battaries. So far it is working ok. I feel as long as voltage rating of cells is important. "mAH"-indicates the the no. of hours the specific rating ampere current is drawn from the source.

I think the Nikon Charger is fine but it is also way over priced,on some RC Car site's that sell the same rebranded charger for 10 to 20 bucks.

I got his one off ebay after hearing a lot of good thing's about,it has a ton of features including a cycling mode witch can really help bring cells back to life and keep them in shape.
I'll post a review of this charger when I get it.Take a look at the chart and read how they tested the Battery's and look at the bottom 3 AA cells and what a rip off they are, they are supposed 3000 Mah plus and only took a charge of 450 some odd Mah after being fully dishcarged.
