Memory card for D200

My suggestion would be to buy as many 4GB Compact Flash cards as you can afford. Prices vary from store to store and country to country. Buying huge gigabyte cards increases your chances of losing a lot of photos should the card fail on you. Smaller gigabyte cards lessen that chance of losing everything.

Also, please remember that capacity depends on what quality level you are shooting ... RAW, TIFF, both eat up a lot of memory (but worth it) where as shooting the various JPEG quality levels will allow many images to be stored. Kenneth's question is absolutely appropriate. You might want a larger capacity card for a prolonged day in the field, but as soon as the shoot is over download and erase.

PhotoJack also brings up some good points ... I "invested" in a 16GB for my D700, but am sorry I didn't buy several smaller cards which would have been much more appropriate for what I shoot. I might just put it in my bag as one of my reserve cards as I don't quite trust it yet.

Downloading 1000 shots sure could take some time, I fully agree with the 4 gb size and using multiples. You might want to look at a back-up like a vosonic.
I just cringe thinking of losing 1000 shots, so back-up, and back-up again.

Buy yourself a USB powered hard drive they are pretty cheap (around $100.00) for 500GB. For the price of a couple memory cards you get 500GB or better. You can store 1000s of pictures on it, and your pictures are safe. Plus it clears up your camera card.
Western Digital comes to mind. I have one it is the size of a wallet and you can carry it anywhere. Its great, and as I said for the price of a few cards you have 500GB or better.
You can set up different files on it, etc. Its fantastic., I could not see being without one.

Curt, curious about the external, don't you need a laptop/computer to download the camera to the external drive? I chose the vosonic so I can directly download and view, it also uses a laptop hard drive.

Yes, you need a computer; I guess I just assumed everyone has one…lol.
Or if you have a Media player, like a O’ Play??
I have a Western Digital Hard drive (500GB) I can store 1000s of photos on it.
But you are right if you don’t have a computer, the Vosonic is your best bet.

I travel and shoot in eastern europe, sometimes bringing a laptop isn't practical so the vosonic does the trick rather than just trust the cards, if handy I donload to my laptop and burn dvd's of the pics for backup. I also use the vosonic for my music player while on a plane.
