It looks like you're asking what is d.o.f or depth of field. Depth of field relates to the farthest distance in front of and behind the actual focus point that retains reasonably sharp focus. Lenses with longer focal lengths have a shallower depth of field than lenses with shorter focal lengths (telephoto vs. wide-angle). When architectural photographers shoot exteriors and interiors, we rely on the very deep depth of field--obtained from wide and super-wide angle lenses--to show as much of the structure in focus as possible (unless we're purposely looking to do otherwise).
