cleaning the lens

Is the oil on the glass itself? Use a cotton to wipe away the oil, then try a commercial lens cleaner liquid to remove what might be left. Check your lens manual to see if
alcohol can be used, especially if it is a coated lens, this might help as well. One more piece of advice - keep your D700 out of the kitchen!

Isopropyl alcohol works to clean the lens. Not certain about coated lenses though.

I suspect many here might be too young to recall the days when photographers for Playboy magazine would place a smear of Vaseline on the objective to soften the image just enough. They used Isopropyl alcohol to clean it off.

If it got spilled into a zoom lens, get it immediately to an authorized repair center. They are inherently loose to allow zooming and if it gets into the works, it can make a horrible mess in the AF motors and VR function.
