Online/Cloud Back-Up Solution

I just recently copied all my files from my PC and my Mac (I know...) to a new 500GB external drive and as I take more and more pictures, I am getting more and more nervous about loss, even with the back-up drive. (i.e. We recently had some bad weather and if a tornado wiped out the house it would wipe out the cameras, computers and drive.)

I was just curious of anyone who used online/cloud type storage what the best, or at least top services to consider would be. It's not that much data currently, relatively speaking, (abt 300GB) but it is growing rapidly.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance...

I use Photoshelter for some of my photos . . . you can purchase extra gb as you go. I also use Backblaze to back up all photos on my laptop.

I've been reluctant to respond as I'm a certified Disaster Recovery / Business Continuity consultant working for a cloud provider. So rather than a recommendation I'm just going to caution you to look at more than cost. You should also research what would happen if the provider should go out of business and I'd recommend a multi-tier solution (local and cloud).

I use Dropbox and I also clone my hard drive about once a week (for my MacBook Pro) using a dedicated hard drive and a program called SuperDuper. If my computer were to crash I could reinstall everything with the SuperDuper backup. Same goes if I had to replace the computer I could migrate everything from the SuperDuper backup onto the new computer. (I use the free version of SuperDuper)

I use two external drives that I move my pictures to and keep them identical as possible (I always buy my externals in pairs for this reason). I keep one at work locked up and about once a month I bring it home to sync them. I use backblaze for the online copy because it will backup from external drives. I have it configured to backup from the external only. I also have the backup folder for my laptop set as well should it fail.

Edward, on a previous post, you compared life expectancy of HHD versus CD/DVD. After that, I made some extra reading. Since then I'm no longer using those medium exclusively for backups. Decided to build one more VM with Opennas and also have a pair of external drives which I take to the office :) backups are now much faster :)

I had forgotten about that post! Glad it worked out for you.

This is an interesting thread, as I find myself currently wondering the very same thing. Having read everyone's suggestions, it seems that a multi-system backup is probably best. Local (external HDs) and a cloud based of some sort, regardless of the vendor. Would most agree with that? Another question still remains, which do you start with? I am currently looking at external hard drives. Is this where most have started? Or should I go cloud based first? Also, any advice on how quickly I should follow one with the other? i.e. have an external for a few months/year, then add on the cloud. Sooner?

Thank you all!
