Live View does not work after connecting USB Cable

Good morning everyone.

I'm trying to set up my Nikon D5100 for use as a webcam. I followed instructions here to download the WebView utility and connect the camera via the USB cable. When I open my video recording software, the camera does show up as a video source, but I am unable to switch to LiveView. If I do not have the USB cable plugged into the camera, I am able to switch to Live View, but that would preclude me from using it as a webcam. Does anyone have any idea if there is an additional setting I am missing, or if this functionality is incorrectly identified as working?

I have not used the WebView utility, but I do regularly tether my D750 and D7000 to a notebook PC with a USB cable and freeware DigiCamControl. The LiveView screen appears on the PC software, not on the back of the camera when I use the software, and I switch the LiveView on/off remotely also. I just assume that WebView works in similar fashion.

But I am not trying to use as a webcam, but instead making long-exposure time-lapse shots for astrophotography.

BF Hammer,
Thank you very much for the information. I downloaded DigiCamControl Virtual Webcam, and I was up and running in just a few minutes. I am using the camera to record video presentations. I bought a teleprompter and was able to use a regular webcam, but wanted to try my Nikon because it offers me a bit more control over the zoom. I fired up Wondershare Filmora, and it enabled me to connect to the camera's stream coming from DCC. Really appreciate the guidance.

Glad you got it worked out. I had not tried the DCC webcam edition and I think it is still in beta, so did not want to recommend it outright.
