My files are backed up, but darn it!!!!

I was earlier working with Lightroom(LR) and noticed that a lot, if not most, of my photo files were unavailable. So I checked to see it the drive they were on had been disconnected from the computer, discovering that it had. When it was reconnected, it was empty. Most of the files are backed up on another drive, but LR doesn't know that, so all of my LR work seems to be lost, and now if I want to find a photo, I have to search all of the other drives and rework them in LR. I'm going to have to recopy all of the files to the empty drive, which I've checked and can do.

I've run antivirus scans on everything and the only possibility is that the drive was wiped or reformatted inadvertently. I've got a lot of work to do, but at least I have most of my files backed up.

Are your files backed up?

I've been told that if your digital work doesn't exist at three separate, distinct street addresses, it doesn't really exist. So mine does. Here at home, at a neighbors', and at a family members'.

Mine isn't in threes, but I can still get to it with a lot of work. My realization now is that I should have mirrored my drives, and not just shared files between them. i should take actions on both of these lines.

Have you run any diagnostics on the hard drive to make sure its not dying.

Mine is old school, all the data is save to a virtual drive on the internal drive. The data is backed up along with the the configuration files for important programs. I also copy the data from the virtual drive to a hard drive occasionally. Mirrored drives drives would be fantastic but not a option for me at this time.

I have 3 duplicate copies of the external drive with my photos on it. All three drives are named the same so if I lose one I can plug in another and LR will recognize it. I keep my current month of shots on my Macbook and they get backed up with it and then moved to the external which holds my "Master" catalog (I keep a "Working" and "Master" catalog and switch betwn the two). Whenever I update or change any older work I then use a program called FreeFileSync and it scans the drive and identifies any files that are either new or changed from the other drives and will copy/update them on the clone. It's a killer piece of freeware and works on both PC and Mac.

Having a bunch of copies of everything is fine, but if they're stored together a single event (fire, flood, theft, hacking etc) can leave you with nothing.
