Mac Users: iMac Pro Worth It?

Would like to hear from photographers who use Mac. Is the coming iMac Pro worth the extra $$$? I don't do any video editing, so I'm talking specifically using a Mac for heavy-duty photo editing with LR and PhotoShop. Is the iMac Pro extra performance (and price tag) significantly better for the digital photographer than a highly-optioned regular iMac?

I'll be buying a new Mac in the coming months and would appreciate your thoughts.

I use an Early-2012 iMac...the biggest improvement you can make with a Mac is simply add/upgrade to an SSD drive. I keep LR on the SSD drive, but all my images and catalogues are on an external USB drive... It's lightening fast... for $300ish... Don't need to spend $5k... IMO...

I don't see it being all that, unless you're editing 4K video. I'm running on a Mac Pro (the new silver trash can machine) and barely break a sweat doing anything in LightRoom. The price of the new iMac puts it well into Mac Pro territory, but I don't see it offering anything for Lightroom to take advantage of that isn't already in the current 5K iMac.

Thanks Fred and Charlie. Just went to Apple.com and spec'ed the just released iMac Pro. It's significantly more expensive than a loaded regular iMac. Looks like all the added bells and whistles are aimed at video and 3D modeling users. Looks like the value pick for strictly photo users is a regular Mac with a nice SSD.

Watch out for 1TB iMac they put a smaller SSD from 128GB to 64GB this is for the fusion drive ones. I have a 2012 that has a 128GB but the original 1TB gave me a SMART warning of an eminent failure so I back up and it 3 months after warranty. I looked at two videos and cracked it open and replaced the 1TB with a 3 TB and create a fusion drive with the original 128GB. It really was not that hard although I bought it as a refurbished iMac from Apple and did opt for Apple Care. At that time I did not know how to take it apart. Since then I have repaired several iMacs including a 2011 that needed the center fan replaced which involved the mother board to be removed to gain access.
Phew!!!

I have a mid 2012 Mac mini and switched the hd out for an SSD. It’s pretty awesome ... I’ve a very good high quality monitor as well, which can take 2 inputs...one from the Mac and another from the pc. I want an iMac but I don’t want to have 2 screens. Neither the iMac 5k nor the new pro tempt me at those prices...... well maybe the 5k does
