Codec for NEF files - anyone downloaded this? Thoughts?

I have been shooting RAW and jpeg fine giving me two large files of everything. The JPEGS were so I could see in advance what I was getting when not in Lightroom (Windows 8.1 user) or share them quickly if they turned out decent enough. I have wanted to download the Codec and start deleting all these redundant files but have read that one should back up everything first. I have been slowly backing up to the cloud as well as an external hard drive. Does anyone else use the Microsoft Codec for Nikon RAW files? Did you encounter any problems with it?

I've been using it for a long time and never had any issues with it. That said, creating a restore point before installing it is a good idea with any piece of software.

The codec should be good but have you tried downloading your raw images into view,that will show your jpeg which you can save out or move the raw into L/R for editing ( or do both),i don't shoot jpeg because view means i dont need it.
