I tried to update iTunes but get a prompt that it failed. I suspect some type of registry error and even asked in the past how to fix it; however, I am unable to find my previous request while doing an advanced forum search. Any suggestions on what will clean up my registry? I am using Windows 7. Thanks for any help!

Try either/both Wise Registry Cleaner or the old standby CCleaner.

Thanks, Paul. I tried both but neither worked. :(

Have you tried to do a System Restore?
Restore back a few days and try the iTunes update again.

I haven't been able to update iTunes for ages (literally months and months) so that won't work.

The problem now is the version of iTunes I had isn't compatible with the latest ios10 for an iPhone, and I just exchanged my 2-week old iPhone SE for a new one from an Apple Store. Unfortunately there wasn't any way for me to connect this phone to iTunes. I tried the Repair option through the Control Panel. That didn't work either. I wound up removing iTunes altogether, but I still can't install their latest version even after using the cleaning programs Horoscope Fish mentioned. Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

In the meantime, I may have to pull out my really old Vista laptop and see if I can update iTunes on it. I think I got that laptop around 2007. :beguiled:

I don't have an iphone but my daughter does. On her previous computer it was always a pia to update itunes. Current computer gives no issues. I think I used to download the file outside of itunes and run with a right click 'as administrator' for added good luck. Found this along the lines I was thinking:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201668

They mention disabling conflicting software. That is a real possibility. Quick but less thorough way is to try simply exiting some of the running programs on the lower right hand tray. Right click and exit or quit if the option is there. To add to the misery, its not always the item that first seems to cure the problem when its disabled. Here is something to play with if you want to get a deeper into temporarily disabling startup programs:
How to Disable Startup Programs in Windows

If you do find a definite conflict, sometimes just reinstalling the offender fixes things.

I tried to uninstall all of the Apple software, but the Apple Software Update must be corrupt. I can't uninstall or repair it. And the registry cleaner Horoscope Fish suggested doesn't even bring it up. Everything else by Apple including iTunes has been removed. Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated--with the exception to tell me not to touch anything by Apple. ;)

You're trying to uninstall iTunes from the "Programs and Features" applet in the Control Panel, yes? And you've made sure QuickTime Player and Apple Software Update are also not running, yes?

What happens when you try to uninstall the application; do you get an error message or... ??

I already uninstalled iTunes and don't have Quicktime. This is what I see while trying to uninstall the Apple Software Update. I even tried to uninstall through the cleaner program but still wind up with the same error message.

One good thing that came out of this is it repaired something with PCC. I used to be able to right-click a jpeg and select the option to open with Adobe PCC, but that has had its own issues for a long time. Just found out I can now open jpegs with PCC! :encouragement:

But still stuck with this other registry problem.

Roger that... Here's the next thing to try. Download, install and run this Uninstall Utility from Microsoft. If this fails, I'm out of ideas.

Thank you, Paul! That removed the problem and allowed me to install the updated version of iTunes. Haven't yet tried to connect my iPhone--might wait until tomorrow for that. I am surprised all my albums are already loaded in iTunes. Here I had assumed I would need to do that all over again since I uninstalled all the Apple Software as well as the older version of iTunes.

Thanks!
