Printer Suggestions

My wife and I have been talking about a printer to take some of my photos and print them. I have taken a few to places and had them printed, but she would like for me to get one for home.

Looking for suggestions. I am considering two Canon printers. The Pro 10 and 100. There is a significant price difference. Mostly this would be used to print photos for gifts, but who knows...

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/893735-REG/Canon_6227b002_Pixma_Pro_10_Photo_Inkjet.html

Is anyone using either of these. What might drive me to go from the 100 to the 10. Any help would be appreciated. Decisions like this are hard for me these days.

I asked about this in the past. I think it might have been Fred Kingston who said the biggest differences are in the types of ink used. One is for more permanent colors that don't fade over time (the more expensive one). I'm still deciding on the less expensive one because after its rebate, it comes in at a really good price and would allow me to print 11x14.

Thank you Cindy. I never would have considered that.

I found the info, Dan. It comes from this thread.

Cindy...

The two printers are identical... the only difference is one uses dye based inks, and the other uses pigment based inks... research the differences to see if you need one over the other... I don't... so opted for the less expensive machine...

That is very helpful Cindy. I am going to be looking hard at the 100 I think. Thank you!

The Pro 10 isn't a great deal even with the rebate. Right now after the rebate, the price will be $449.99. If you read what I posted in that other thread, the price after rebate and instant savings was $249.99.

I don't recall what the price of the Pro 100 was back at that time, but I just pulled the trigger for one myself. ;)

Cindy, I just went to B&H... the rebate you mentioned ends today. Given that price, with the rebate, I am going to pull the trigger. Thanks for the direction and the other thread. I will let you know how it goes.
@FredKingston thanks for the information on inks in the other thread and your endorsement of the 100 model. That and the rebate sent me to the "confirm order" button.

Have you thought of Epson printers ? I have used a few over the years.

I did look at them. I have a friend with the Canon Pro 10. I like her's but I could not get my head around the price. Based on the feedback I go I pulled the trigger on the Pro 100.

My printer is the older Pro 9500 Mark II which uses pigment ink. Since I decided to print my own work I wanted the longest lasting ink. Now you need to think about paper. I have used Ilford Pearl for years but understand that it may no longer be available and am experimenting with Hahnemuhle Silk Baryta now. good luck with your printing, you are about to embark on an entirely new learning curve.

Thanks Ron. I was a bit reluctant to do this but my wife Pat really wants me to print some of my photos... So here we go. I think it will be an interesting adventure.

@Danno please keep this thread alive with your experience reports and choices re ink and paper etc.

The original brand of ink is expensive. When I considered an Epson photo printer, Jake posted an Amazon link where the cartridges made by Epson were a much better/lower price. It would be nice if Canon offered a less expensive brand name set as well.

This enormous box arrived today. :eyetwitch: I knew the shipping box would be bigger than a normal all-in-one printer, but it's definitely larger than I expected. Hopefully I'll have time over the next week to find a place for it and set it up. I know it will also require a larger working area than a regular printer.

Danno, there was a second box shipped with it that has 13" x 19" Canon photo paper in it. I didn't happen to see anything about its being included with the purchase so just a heads-up.

They often do that to try and get you to use there paper. They also throw in free paper with ink packages. I usually give the paper away, but I do like their luster but they do not seem to offer it free.

I was in photofinishing for many years so when I got into Digital photography I though printing my own would be the way to go. Spent a lot of money to get a nice printer that would print up to 13X19 (I think) took forever and lots of ink and paper to get the color just like I wanted it. Then ran out of paper so decided to try a different size of paper and ended up having to reset the color. In the end I just ended up dropping the idea of printing my own photos Was cheaper and better just to get a lab to do it for me. This was a few years ago so things may have changed by now
