Incremental backup software

Can I get some suggestions/advice on buying backup software for my pictures? I back up regularly to an external drive and am getting fed up with having to sort out the new images from the ones already saved.

Windows 8.1, I'll give this a try thank you Don

I use it for syncing folders between my laptop and my desktop all the time. I like my documents on both computers to be the same. All my photos are on a external drive so I can access them from either computer.

Once you start with it you will see that you can create different folder pairs so you can set up different syncs depending on what you are working for. First time running it might take a while but after that it will just look to see what needs updating and will only do what it has to. I just wait till I am through and click it and walk away and it does what it needs to without me having to do anything else.

that is not a incremental backup though. That is a Full Disk-Image Backup. Basically good for a full restore only and not just for a few files. Good to have one and I do that every day also but sometimes you just want to restore a few files.

I believe Acronis allows you to do granular restores from the image. Through the interface you would drill down through the image's folder structure and select what you wanted to restore. And depending on the size of your backup drive (and number of incremental backups you keep) you can restore different versions of a particular file. It's a very robust program. In the end it boils down to what the user needs.

I rarely do any processing on Image Files after the first stint. So in my case I backup the RAW files with the sidecar files once I have finished processing them, once a day. The jpegs that I export are backed up at longer intervals.
