Raw photo editing software

I have used the "Camera Raw" routine in Photoshop for many years and it works very well. Lightroom is somewhat more limited in scope compared to Photoshop but it will work ok as well. I have used NX2 a little and honestly, I do not see any real advantage over Photoshop.

Lightzone or Darktable are both free. I've only tried Lightzone and it works differently from LR but quite well IMHO. Capture One Pro 8 is another very good piece of software. I mostly use LR at the moment but consider migrating to Capture One in the future.

I have a Mac Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and a DD3300. What photo editing software should I get to process raw photos?

The current version of Lightroom requires a minimum of OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). If you can, you need to upgrade OS X.

I use NX-D, but on a PC. NX-I is more of a viewing and conversion software rather than a RAW processor. Start with NX-D and then after you get a hang of what it can /cannot do, decide if you need any thing more.
And after you see what you can do with NX-D, try Capture One (trial version) and see what you have been missing.

If my friend @J-see were here, he'd recommend Raw Therepee. I have tried it myself and it is a great program and it is free. Quite the learning curve coming from LR and PS, but for someone starting out who is not used to other software, I would recommend it as well.

RT all the way. The latest versions with wavelets make it a next generation editor. You can process an image at different detail levels while most other editors are still doing "all or nothing".

Not an easy program to learn but worth every minute invested. Free too.

For all RT doesn't do, get Affinity Photo on the Mac. Ridiculously cheap for what it offers.
