Back-up Overload

Today I discovered that my external hard drive that I use for Back-ups was full. It took me all of 6 hours to send the older back-ups to trash.

I've never had this issue before as I was under the impression I was deleting previous back-ups straight after the current backup.
This seems not to be the case!

Can anyone advise how to set this up please? I can't spend 6 hours at a time emptying the trash.

How are you backing up? Are you using Time Machine or file copy or some other method?

That's the part I'm not sure aboiut. I tried to figure it out but failed.
Just looking at the drive today it has 8 back-up from yesterday which is crazy as each one seems to be a full back-up of everything

It is the time machine and I don't know how to turn it off or reschedule it.
When I open it I get a screen showing all the back-ups completed but no options to reschedule or turn off.
Have i ever told you I hate computers?

Should be pretty straight forward from System Preferences:

Then click on Time Machine...

The slider enables/disables whether Time Machine runs at all or not.

I see from the snap shot that there is an options button on the lower right corner of the Time Machine window. Looks like a pretty handy program.

I use Time Machine, even restored from it. It works but for some reason a few weeks ago I had to do the same thing. Its been fine since then. Something got hung, who knows. But I always maintain 2 backups, one is in the computer and one is external. I just added a new drive that will be used only for pictures.

Just keep an eye on it after your clean up.

Also, what is the size of the drive you are backing up. Some say your backup drive should be twice the size of the drive being backed up. Hence my search/desire to add one more drive, but bought the portable drive for now.

Sounds like what happened to mine as it was fine. Last two days I been getting messages that it is full - even got that earlier today after yesterday's 6 hour deleting marathon.
its a 1 tetrasouraus (993.42 GB to be exact) external drive.

Now I don't know if I should turn time machine on again or not.

Its better than nothing, so I would turn it back on and explore other options to see if they fit your needs more. I have been using it for 6 years and its only done this 1 time that I recall.

Just check if the backup is incremental (that is it backs up new and edited items), or just dumps the selected portions of the disk. Both have their advantages, but the latter method will fill up any disk fast.

I would suggest that you adopt a slightly different strategy for back ups
. Use Time Machine for general back up
. Use a separate disk to copy your RAW files only. 14 bit RAW files should be around 22MB, so you should be able to accommodate at least 45 thousand RAW files per 1TB drive.
