Photoshop Elements only?

I use Elements and DSLR. Have shot in RAW too (and plan to again soon).

If I remember correctly if the camera is an up to date model, you need the up to date Elements.

It can - I have PSE but haven't used it on RAW, but a quick test opened the file initially in Camera RAW for the basic exposure adjustments etc, then gave the option of opening in fully in PSE. After editing in PSE the changes are saved to your preferred format as you cannot save a .NEF file.

For my sins its all i use and i shoot raw,the only problem i have found is its easy to overcook things in the raw editor so when you move on to PSE it doesn't look as good

Hmm, the camera would be a D3300 & Elements is version 10 - about 3 years old. Does this mean that our version of Elements wouldn't work?

I have been using PSE 11 and only shoot RAW. It works absolutely fine.
I am almost certain that PSE 10 would be more than adequate.

Planning a DSLR for my wife.

Can PSE deal successfully with RAW & be used as the sole PP software?
In short, yes.

PSE is a sort of admix of strippd down versions of both Photoshop and Lightroom. It handle RAW files just fine and combines the more basic features of both LR and PS while leaving out the more advanced functionality of both. It has some of the workflow management tools of Lightroom and some of the editing tools from Photoshop and as such it could be used as your sole tool for editing and workflow management. Heck, I do most of my most basic adjustment in Camera RAW (which would come with Elements) and I think I a strong case could be made that ACR is about the only editing tool you need... I mean, it could be done!

The big deal-breakers for me in using PSE are these: No support for 16-bit file processing (8-bit only). BOOM. That... Is reason enough right there for me; I'm not stripping down my 14-bit RAW files to 8-bit for post processing, no way, no how. There is no support for "Actions", like PS has, which is a big bummer and, lastly... I'm addicted to Adobe Bridge (which only comes with PS I believe) as my management tool. It's just sooo powerful, easy and well integrated with PS that I couldn't live without it now. The idea of not having Review Mode in Bridge to cull my shots is just unthinkable. Granted, these are personal reasons but they may be things you want to think about as well.

Thanks for the detailed info. I'm trying to check for any hidden costs. My wife already uses PSE with her Canon IXUS, so has some knowledge of the product. So it looks like just a matter of additional hard drive space.

You might want to look at this link About Elements+ if you stay with Elements; and yes as the previous poster said Elements is only 8 bit and if you are shooting RAW is 16 bit. The other consideration is that you have a Nikon software to open newer Camera RAW other wise you have to get a new version of Elements as the Camera RAW isn't updated. Head is spinning!
