Awesome but most users only need to know two things; 1) power cord, 2) on/off switch. :)

So true. I remember way back in the dark ages of the last century and my father's first computer. He was one of those people who would turn everything off and then unplug the power strip from the wall. One morning, he called me at about 4 a.m. complaining that his printer wouldn't work. I asked him if he had turned it on. He got very angry and hung up on me. He had forgotten flip the printer power switch to "ON". :)

I'm the family computer tech so I've heard some doozies and that's usually the first thing I ask now...Did you plug it in?

I think the funniest was my grand daughter said her computer would run a while and cut off.
She had a long haired cat and the computer was on the floor so when I took it apart I bet I got 3 big handfulls of fur out of it which was causing it to overheat and shut down.

I like the big poster size pictogram they give you with a new desktop that points to all the connectors. What is so funny is that now almost all the cables will only go in one place one way. The only exception is the audio cables and they make the writing so small on those that you have to plug it in each one and see if it works.

Get this - my father-in-law kept having problems with his computer so he got a new one and it wasn't but a few months before it started acting weird. So when we were over he showed us the problem. Sure enough, it was acting strangely but our dinner was ready so we decided we'd look at it later. At this point he reached down to his powerstrip and pressed the toggle switch. Turns out this was how he thought you were supposed to turn a computer on and off.

I have been working on a friend's computer for 2 days now trying to clean it up. 20,000 file fragments and 30 viruses and adaware has so far identified over 100 threats so far.

People if I find out that you are not running some sort of virus protection all the time I will send Helene (ohkphoto) over to your house to have a talk with you and believe me you don't want that.

I think i'll have to get a red carpet ready to roll out for Helene :p
Haven't had viruses in my system for over 5 years now...with no anti virus..
The only one that was close to usable was AVG
I've always found them to drag the system to death
IMO one good feature of WIN is the firewall. It's solid & unless you visiting 'unwanted' ( ;) ) websites, you are safe at most times.
The MAC is virus proof anyways

Wow sounds like he's either not been using his anti-virus for a long time and/or going to risky/risque sites. :)
If you are not running at least one anti-virus application you are asking for trouble.

No virus protection at all and they have a high school age son. The kid had two different desktops on the machine and I deleted all his content and user accounts.

Pretty handy, although I'm not sure about the relevance of CPU sockets? Normally one cannot just replace the CPU but would have to replace (if possible) the entire motherboard.

Tell Helene to start packing! :)

You got your work cut out for you then. I'd say if he didn't have a lot on there of value to just reinstall OS to save time and be sure that everything is gone.

I am trying to make sure all the trash has been taken out and then upgrade to windows 7. I have two copies of it here and am only using one. the problem is I don't know which one is not being used now. I really don't think MS is really checking that close anyway.

Not at all! CPUs can be replaced as well!
You get Intel & AMD motherboards which allow you a lot of expansion opportunities for each manufacturer.
The CPU can be removed & upgraded within the limits of the motherboard

The product key doesn't really matter until you go to register and usually they are pretty lenient as long as you haven't reinstalled/installed recently or frequently you'll be OK. I've put the same Weven on a couple of machines and it hasn't complained.

Plus many of them are color coded.

I use a Mac, and also use Linux on my other laptop. Never had a virus problem, but I do use ClamAV one a month and have it check everything. Also, when I was still running Windows at home, I never had a problem with viruses, malware, trojans, etc. It's called safe computing. :)

Spousal Unit's computer running WinXP SP3 got infected with a virus and all sorts of whacked out malware when he went to the Web site of a well-known Christian organization. The next time he used the browser on his computer, it popped up about 100 separate browser windows of porn and porn sites. It seems the Web site had been hacked. We laughed so hard. :) It took me a few hours to clean up his computer, but it has never happened again. He is much more careful about what Web sites he goes to now.

My internet provider account comes with McAfee Security Centre at no extra charge and works great. Never have a problem with viruses or malware or anything else. It just works silently in the background, doing its thing. :)

Spousal Unit........LOL! That still cracks me up! :)
