Looks to be a good one, but how does it work?
Do you install this & run it for each image or does it integrate into some software?
It's a firmware update so it will work with the "Auto Distortion Control" setting of your camera. With this function enabled the camera body and lens "talk" to one another to correct for distortion automatically.

In order for this to work, however, the lens in question has to be in the "library" of lenses stored in the camera's firmware. This update adds *more* lenses to the exisiting library so the auto-distortion control function will work with them. I'm glad to see the 18-105mm has been added as well as the 55-200mm!

Thanks Dave,

Does Nikon e-mail you if there is a firmware update for your camera?
Or do you just look on the nikon site for firmware updates every so often?

Nikon sends a personal representative to Dave's door and inquires when would be a good time to update the firmware on his cameras. They do a complimentary sensor cleaning as well and Dave gets a massage while waiting. It's all part of the D800 "Pure Platinum Package".

Nikon and I are tight. We used to go clubbing together back in the day. He was my wingman on many an epic night. In fact, I'm godfather to his first born because I was there when he met Mrs. Nikon. But now days we don't get together all the much, email occasionally, maybe a call now and then. Things change, people get older and we all settle down, it's just the way life is, I suppose. :)

Hello James,

I all depends on the way one perceives things…

A manufacturer of optical and fine mechanic devices knows exactly (or should) in
which conditions, parameters, and tolerances a given product has left production.
This manufacturer knows best all there is to know about the technologies implied
and the eventual adaptations to new conditions in which the product will used.

Your post-production software (or mine) are applying corrections after the fact. An
update will apply new parameters tweaks directly in, and exactly for, the camera-lens
combination you are using.

Software are applying their effect on the RAW files once they are out of the camera.
Don't you wish to have the best RAW files possible before they are transferred to
your computer?

Have a good day…
