Upgrade for free? Have they done that before? I'm interested to see if the next release of LR is going to be by subscription only.

I have LR3 didn't purchase LR4 on the advice of a retired professional. I'm rethinking that, now that PS has gone to subscription.

No... Adobe has announced in every venue/blog/forum it can reach that Lightroom is NOT going to be on the subscription service.

It has also been Adobe's (as well as most other software vendors) practice that when a new pending version has been announced, that the current version is eligible for either a free upgrade, and/or a heavily discounted upgrade price... If they didn't, then current sales would immediately stop while folks waited for the new version...

If you're on the cusp. and need to be assured of it, simply call Adobe and speak directly with a sales rep. and ask them what the upgrade option is...

I can't imagine why anyone would hesitate to upgrade from version 3 to version 4... professional or otherwise...

Thank you for the information. I don't need to call Adobe; I'll take your word for it. I just wasn't aware of the upgrade possibilities.

As far as the upgrade, shouldn't I just wait for LR5 at this point?

They always run specials on the old version just prior to releasing the new (expected in June?). LR will not be subscription, as was said.

There is nothing Adobe has ever done that makes me believe that buying LR4 now, particulalry at a discount, will give you a free upgrade path to LR5. They have been giving away the beta version since early April to whet appetites. Perhaps a reduced price on the upgrade, which usually seems to sell at about 50%. LR4 listed at $149 and seems to be selling at just under $100. Standard upgrade is $79. I'd just download the free beta of LR5 and wait for them to release the full version and buy then.

The trial is supposed to expire on general release - end of June was their best guess, but if the release gets delayed you'll have it until it happens.
